Obsolete does not mean unavailable
There is an active global market for new-old-stock (NOS), refurbished, and surplus industrial parts. The key is working with a supplier who can source across that market quickly and verify quality.
What helps when you send a sourcing request
First, give the exact part number (MPN) and the brand. For PLCs, include the complete order number — for example, a Siemens part like 6ES7 214-1AG40-0XB0 — because small suffix differences change the hardware revision.
Second, state the quantity and the condition you can accept. Many customers accept refurbished or NOS when new parts are unavailable, and a reliable supplier will tell you the difference in warranty coverage.
Third, share the application. Knowing whether the part runs a critical safety function or a non-critical conveyor lets the supplier suggest a cross-reference or an equivalent family.
Fourth, ask about alternatives. For obsolete PLCs, sometimes the same I/O modules and racks are still in production, and only the CPU needs a replacement strategy.
